NaPoWriMo Prompt #22

Julie Rrap 'Castaway' 2009

We think today’s prompt and picture are particularly evocative. Why not write a poem, and then head over to our Kickstarter page and make a donation towards the 2nd annual NYC Poetry Festival? So many great ideas in one little sentence, and they can both get you goodies!

Prompt #22:
Poem in which we are blindsided by you but refuse defeat

  1. Codicil Bequest

In your will, I have gained an empty bed
To rise out of on cloudy Sunday mornings,
As well as the wealth of a mirror
That reflects me in the clear, alone today,
This is the generosity you have set aside for me
And I take it, better than thinking of you
Gone one day and put down as another loss,
Perhaps you have left for a better place,
Which might be in any bed that I do not share,
No reason to leave and go out
To test and observe your rumored happiness,
I stay inside to eat breakfast and drink my coffee,
Discovering your greatest gift of all,
A trust fund that you set up in my name,
Where I gain silence and free time
To work on my poems until Monday comes.
